Medicines
Many children will need to take medicines during the school day. This will usually be for a short period only, perhaps to finish a course of antibiotics or to apply a lotion. To allow children to do this will minimise the time that they need to be absent. However such medicines should only be taken to school where it would be detrimental to a child’s health if it were not administered during the school day.
Medicines are only allowed in school by arrangement between the Headteacher and parents. Staff should never give a non-prescribed medicine to a child unless there is prior written permission from the parents.
If your child requires medication during school hours, a medical form must be completed and handed to the school office.
- Medicines should always be provided in the original container as dispensed by a pharmacist and include the prescriber’s instructions for administrations.
- The parent should inform the school of any changes in diagnosis and treatment and if any changes are needed in arrangements at school.
- It is the parents/ carers responsibilty to bring the medicine to school and collect it at the end of the day.
When a child has been diagnosed by a GP as asthmatic or other chronic illness, it is the parents’ responsibility to inform school, to request that medication be kept in school and to discuss arrangements, which will meet their child’s needs.
