Reading  

At Metheringham Primary School, we strongly believe in fostering a love of reading from a very early age. We prioritise early reading as soon as the children join us in EYFS and reading continues to be prioritised all the way through to Year 6. No child is left behind at Metheringham Primary School, therefore we ensure all of the necessary steps are in place to ensure that they leave as confident and fluent readers, who are well equipped and prepared for their next phase of education; they will learn to read, regardless of their background, needs or ability. We strive to provide a reading-rich curriculum, which exposes pupils to a plethora of genres and text types. We ensure we are successful in doing this by making links to texts across all areas of the curriculum. In turn, pupils will become familiar with and enjoy studying, reading and listening to a variety of texts. This will develop their vocabulary, reading and language comprehension, support them in meeting or exceeding age related expectations, while continuing to develop a love for reading as they move through school.  

We are a Lincolnshire Reading Pledge school and are working towards the Bronze award. The aim of the Lincolnshire Reading Pledge is to ensure that every child, regardless of their background, needs or abilities, becomes a confident, fluent and enthusiastic reader.   

Writing 

At Metheringham Primary School, the teaching of writing starts as soon as the children join us in EYFS and continues all the way through to Year 6. Our aim is for all pupils to leave as confident writers who can communicate their knowledge, ideas and emotions. We strive for children to write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting language and style for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences. In addition, we aim for pupils to leave as confident spellers, with a legible and personal handwriting style. We strive to provide a reading-rich curriculum, which exposes pupils to a plethora of genres and text types. In turn, pupils will become familiar with and enjoy studying, reading and listening to a variety of high-quality texts. This will inspire and develop their flare for writing, support them in meeting or exceeding age related expectations, and prepare them for the next phase of education.  

Spelling

At Metheringham Primary School, we use Spelling Shed to support children on their spelling journey as they progress through a range of games, levels and challenges. The spelling lists on Spelling Shed are grouped together, helping children to learn and apply different spelling rules effectively. Children are able to compete against their teachers and classmates in challenges, assignments and hive games.

Every week, teachers set an assignment linked to the pupil’s spelling words, helping them to practise their spellings in a fun and exciting way in preparation for our weekly spelling test. Children can also choose to practise past spellings to consolidate past learning. Children, staff and parents can keep track of achievements through the points and honeypots that are awarded as the children progress.

The game has been developed to be ‘dyslexia friendly’, using the ‘Open Dyslexic’ font and there are three levels of difficulty to support pupils of all abilities through the spelling lists with appropriate degrees of challenge.

Pupils from Year 1 (Stage 1) to Year 6 (Stage 6) can access Spelling Shed using their personal logins, which are provided by teachers at the start of the academic year.
